Installation is a specialist job, so make sure you choose a firm that’s experienced in slate roofing. Slate roofs can last literally hundreds of years. Slate is fireproof, waterproof and completely natural – in fact it’s super-heated and pressurised ancient mud from river estuaries, dense and smooth. Poor quality slate – which is more like mudstone – can flake, crack and slip, leaving unprotected gaps for the weather to get in and making tiles vulnerable to more damage in icy weather. As with all roofs, a heavy slate roof requires a very firm and solid roof deck specially built for the purpose. And you need to think carefully about which nails, flashing etcetera you use.
